At A Glance
Gracie is a 1.5-year-old Golden Retriever who came into training with Off Leash K9 Training Southwest Florida needing stronger everyday manners and more dependable obedience. She already understood her commands, but food played a major role in whether she chose to respond. Her training focused on helping those behaviors become more reliable without depending on a visible treat, while also strengthening recall, extending Sit and Down, and helping Gracie feel more comfortable around things that made her nervous, including trash cans.
Dog: Gracie
Breed: Golden Retriever
Age: 1.5 years
Program: Dog Training Program
Location: Southwest Florida
Main Focus: Recall, command reliability, Sit duration, Down duration, food dependence, confidence, and everyday manners
Outcome: Stronger understanding of commands, more dependable responses, and greater confidence around previously uncomfortable situations
The Challenge
Gracie came into training with an existing obedience foundation. She knew her commands, but her willingness to follow through could depend heavily on whether food was involved. That meant the challenge was less about introducing completely new skills and more about making the behaviors she already knew more practical and dependable.
Before Training, Gracie:
- Already understood basic commands
- Was strongly motivated by food
- Could be less willing to respond without a treat
- Needed a more reliable recall
- Needed longer Sit duration
- Needed longer Down duration
- Needed stronger everyday manners
- Needed more consistent command follow-through
- Showed nervousness around certain objects
- Was specifically uncomfortable around trash cans
- Needed greater confidence in everyday environments
The goal was to help Gracie understand that obedience still applied even when a food reward was not immediately visible.
The Training Approach
Gracie’s training focused on strengthening known commands while reducing her reliance on treats as the deciding factor in whether she responded.
Training Focused On:
- Strengthening recall
- Improving command consistency
- Extending Sit
- Extending Down
- Building more reliable follow-through
- Reinforcing obedience without depending on visible food
- Improving everyday manners
- Building handler engagement
- Increasing confidence around unfamiliar or uncomfortable objects
- Helping Gracie work through nervousness around trash cans
- Creating more dependable responses in everyday situations
Because Gracie already understood much of the basic obedience, training could focus on reliability, duration, and confidence rather than starting entirely from scratch.
The Results
After training, Gracie showed a stronger understanding of her commands and became less dependent on the presence of food before responding.
What Improved:
- Recall became more dependable
- Sit duration improved
- Down duration improved
- Command understanding became stronger
- Responses became less dependent on treats
- Everyday manners became more reliable
- Confidence improved
- Gracie became better equipped to work through things that previously made her nervous
- Overall obedience became more practical and dependable
Rather than waiting to see whether a treat was involved, Gracie developed a stronger expectation that familiar commands still needed to be followed. That progress helped create a more confident and dependable foundation for everyday life.
Trainer Insight
Food can be a useful training tool, especially when introducing behaviors, but dogs also need to learn that commands do not only apply when a reward is visible. For dogs like Gracie, the next stage of training is often about moving from understanding a behavior to performing it more consistently in everyday situations. Confidence-building can also play an important role. When a dog is nervous around specific objects or environments, carefully structured exposure combined with clear guidance can help the dog develop more comfortable and controlled responses over time.
