How long does the Therapy Dog Preparation program take?
The Therapy Dog Preparation program includes eight lessons completed over eight weeks.
Some dogs may need additional obedience training before beginning therapy preparation. Continued practice may also be necessary after the eight-week program.
Which training option is right for my dog?
Dogs with foundational obedience and suitable temperaments may be ready for Therapy Dog Preparation.
Dogs lacking basic obedience may need Basic Obedience or Basic & Advanced Obedience first. Dogs with aggression, intense reactivity, or severe fear may require behavior modification or may not be suitable for therapy work.
Does therapy dog training guarantee certification?
No. The eight-week program prepares the owner and dog for therapy dog testing. Upon successful completion, the Fort Myers team can evaluate and help certify eligible teams through Therapy Pets Unlimited.
Program completion does not guarantee certification, acceptance by a particular facility, or continued eligibility.
What is the difference between a therapy dog and a service dog?
A therapy dog participates with a handler in approved visits intended to provide comfort or interaction to other people.
A service dog is individually trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability and may receive public-access protections under the ADA. Therapy dogs do not automatically receive those same public-access rights.
An emotional support animal provides comfort to its owner but is not the same as a trained service dog or a visiting therapy dog.
Can a shy or reactive dog become a therapy dog?
Suitability depends on the individual dog. Dogs must ultimately be comfortable, manageable, and appropriate around unfamiliar people and community environments.
Dogs with aggression, intense reactivity, a bite history, or severe fear may need behavior-focused training instead. Some dogs may never be suitable for therapy work, even after additional training.
Where does therapy dog training take place for Estero clients?
Training locations and scheduling are confirmed directly with the Fort Myers team. Estero owners should not assume that lessons are available at a particular home, facility, or community location without confirmation.
