At A Glance
Ziggy is an almost 3-year-old Italian Water Dog who entered a 14-day Board and Train at Off Leash K9 Training Southwest Florida with trainer Christina. Before training, Ziggy had plenty of enthusiasm but struggled with self-control, leash pulling, excited barking, jumping, door manners, and staying focused around people and other distractions. Although the barking could sound intimidating from a distance, Ziggy was described as friendly with people rather than generally aggressive. After training, Ziggy showed stronger recall, improved doorway manners, better handler engagement, and calmer responses to the surrounding environment.
Dog: Ziggy
Breed: Italian Water Dog
Age: Almost 3 years old
Location: Southwest Florida
Program: 14-Day Board and Train
Trainer: Christina
Main Focus: Excited barking, leash pulling, jumping, door manners, recall, handler engagement, distractions, and self-control
Outcome: Stronger recall, improved door manners, better focus, and calmer, more controlled behavior around everyday distractions
The Challenge
Ziggy entered training as a friendly but highly excitable dog who had difficulty managing stimulation during walks and everyday interactions.
Before training, Ziggy:
- Barked frequently at people during walks
- Pulled on the leash
- Became highly excited around the environment
- Had poor doorway manners
- Jumped when excited
- Needed stronger recall
- Struggled to stay focused on the handler
- Frequently scanned the surrounding environment
- Could growl or bark from a distance
- Was described as uncomfortable around children
- Needed better impulse control
- Became anxious when separated from the owners at drop-off
Christina noted that Ziggy’s barking did not necessarily appear aggressive. Despite being loud and reactive-looking from a distance, Ziggy was described as friendly with people once closer.
The goal was to help Ziggy communicate and respond more appropriately rather than allowing excitement to take over.
The Training Approach
Ziggy’s 14-day program focused on building more dependable obedience and giving all that enthusiasm clearer direction.
Training focused on:
- Strengthening recall
- Improving leash manners
- Reducing excessive pulling
- Reinforcing better doorway behavior
- Addressing jumping
- Building handler engagement
- Improving impulse control
- Practicing calmer responses around people
- Reinforcing focus around distractions
- Helping Ziggy disengage from the surrounding environment
- Building greater confidence
- Creating more consistent everyday expectations
Ziggy already demonstrated some familiarity with sit during the initial assessment, while other skills required additional development and consistency.
The goal was to help Ziggy remain aware of the environment without feeling the need to react to everything happening nearby.
The Results
After training, Ziggy demonstrated meaningful progress in focus, obedience, and self-control.
What improved:
- Recall became stronger
- Doorway manners improved
- Handler engagement became more consistent
- Ziggy became more composed around the environment
- Focus improved around distractions
- Excitement became easier to manage
- Everyday responses became more controlled
- Ziggy learned to stay more connected to the handler
- Confidence and self-control improved
Rather than constantly reacting to everything nearby, Ziggy developed a stronger ability to remain engaged and follow direction.
The progress showed that a highly enthusiastic dog can still enjoy interacting with the world while learning clearer boundaries and more appropriate ways to respond.
Trainer Insight
Excited barking and reactive-looking behavior do not always indicate aggressive intent. Some dogs become highly stimulated by people, animals, movement, or unfamiliar situations and simply have not learned how to regulate that excitement.
For a dog like Ziggy, stronger recall, handler engagement, doorway manners, and impulse control provide practical alternatives to rushing, barking, pulling, or jumping. The goal is not to remove the dog’s enthusiasm but to teach when and how that energy can be expressed appropriately.
Because Ziggy was also described as uncomfortable around children, interactions with children should continue to be managed carefully rather than assuming training alone changes that preference.
